TAP gas “battle”

The European energy giants have rushed to buy the gas that will be transported from the Trans Adriatic Pipeline, which will go through Albania.

The German EON says that they have signed an agreement with the Shah Deniz leaders to buy 16% of the total gas. EON will buy 1.6 billion cubic meters each year for 25 years, starting since 2019, when the pipeline will start operating.

This was the first agreement that was followed by eight others that include Greek corporates such as DEPA, the Italian Enel and the giant Shell. All agreements enter in effect on January 2019.

The TAP pipeline will transport 10 billion cubic meters of natural gas each year in the Euroepan market. According to the project, the production in 2022 will increase with 16 billion cubic meters, most of which has been already sold. All agreements have the European Union markets as destination, such as Greece, Italy, Bulgaria and other countries. It has not been decided so far if there will be gas in Albania. The Albanian government has negotiated with the Azerbaijani state company to build the distribution network that will enable supply to consumers and businesses.

A few days ago the Minister of Energy, Damian Gjiknuri, visited Azerbaijan where he met leaders of the Shah Deniz field, focusing on the construction of the distribution network.
