Export of energy: 2 bln euro investments by 2015

The energy produced in Albania by 2015 will double, going up to 3 thousand megawatts.
The investments being made in this sector make possible an increase of the amount of energy produced, increasing thus the possibility for export.
Director of Energy Policy at the Ministry of Economy Agim Bregasi in an interview with AS showed that Albania will turn into an exporter of energy in the region.
“127 concession agreements were signed for the construction of about 362 hydro power plants with an installed power of around 1500 MW. If these are built according to the terms defined, we will be able to double the installed capacity, implying a fulfillment of Albania’s electricity needs, and to export energy in the regional countries,” he said.
The projects that are being implemented in the construction of hydro power plants, power transmission lines or alternative resources, amount to billions of euros.
“If I am not mistaken, it is somewhere up to 2 billion euros,” Bregasi empohasized.
The production of wind and solar electricity or from other alternative resources is already a reality in Albania.
“There has been interest for wind electricity and ERE and METE have handed over 15 licenses. With a considerable installed strength they, of course, constitute an alternative to the power supply. In addition, the sun energy is a very important resource that is used not only in its form of heat, but also to produce electricity. A great perspective is also offered by the use of natural gas which is expected to enter Albania through the TAP project,” Bregasi said.
The electric power system in the country currently produces an amount of electricity of 1,500 megawatts.
In the next three years, the functioning of projects under construction will double the production, bringing it up to 3 thousand megawatts.
